STATEMENT

History exists within the individual and
the individual exists within history. The
everyday is infused with an epic dimension.
(J.Lingwood, The Epic and the Everyday)

Throughout my work, several inter-related and recurring strands of interest can be discerned: the notion of boundaries both physical and psychological; the superficial calmness that pervades so many aspects of the everyday but which belies underlying tensions; the infusion of people’s day-to-day existence with the qualities of the theatrical and the cinematic; the manner in which we experience our surroundings, how we interact with and behave in our environment; questions of cultural identity within our contemporary landscape; and, ultimately, the power of place - the examination of mundane spaces which can be easily overlooked but, nonetheless, have the capacity to suggest and invoke the experiences and memories of both the individual and the collective whilst encouraging reflection on the past and its connection to the present. I aim to transcend the prosaic in order to evoke complex metaphors of history and remembrance and in order to create images of landscapes and interiors that are (at times) uninhabited but which nonetheless generate a feeling of presence and a multitude of narratives.
