A few years ago, I found myself to be an outcast among my peers, especially in the way of creative thinking. I came to the US in 1989, at the age of 13, from Kharkiv, Ukraine, former USSR.
Having grown up in a Communist country and in New York City, I became unable to completely relate to both, my Russian-speaking and American peers. It’s probably due to that, that I find inspiration in European art as well as graffiti.
In my work I employ the combination of those influences to express my state of mind. The images of Saint-like figures and Biblical events are set against graffiti backgrounds and are executed in spray paint, markers, and house paint. Other times, Biblical motifs become socially political metaphors.
I use the means of creativity to not only assist me in breaking the boundaries of verbal communication but also as a way to create a deeper relationship with my peers.
