STATEMENT
As a performance and installation artist, I am compelled by my surroundings—the place, the season, the materials at hand. In fact, I am intrigued by mundane, seemingly ordinary things and common, repetitive tasks. I tend to work site-specifically, allowing the place to serve as both impetus and collaborative partner. By reconfiguring the elements of object, setting, voice and gesture, I create familiar scenes unsettlingly skewed, evoking sorrow, peril, yearning or simply meditative contemplation. These are moody environments, places to explore the delicacy and complexity of relationships, to recall our lineage, to honor the cyclic nature of life.

With my work I attempt to affix the fleeting, to hold place, to suspend time. The performances, especially, make real what is ethereal, seeking grounding through transformation. I conjure a kind of quiet alchemy by imprinting the space, moment by moment, hour after hour, with repetitive and focused deeds. In fact, the viewers themselves often become tacit performers in the work, induced into a subtly altered condition: a slightly hunched posture, a perceptual refocusing, or a personal, and perhaps fervent, investment in the outcome. In my work, in every way, I seek the magic of being richly and intensely present.
