In the past, my work has been about the city, industrial landscape and the (in)visibility of infrastructure. I photographed the things that go unnoticed: rubbish bins at tourist destinations, scaffolding holding up national treasures, and the power lines that clutter the skyline.
For my last body of work, I photographed significant places that have been endangered in London’s troubled past. Politically charged sites, landmarks that have been damaged through wear or nature, targets of terrorism, locations of fire and epidemic are the focus in this project.
Assuming that photographs, particularly postcards, are “of†something, I digitally removed what the photograph is “ofâ€. As there are elements present such as bridges, buildings and the river Thames, the images exist within specific landscapes. Whether or not people are immediately aware, there are clues as to where they are. It is appealing to play with the idea of reality, and the notion that a photograph is truthful. If the viewer can see an image and not immediately realise something is awry, I think the work is a successful one, especially if it causes uneasiness or confusion.
The final presentation of the work is in “information boothsâ€, lightbox plinths, alluding to information kiosks that exist in many tourist locales and historical landmarks. In addition to the image and text based information, I have included post cards for those who wish to take one away. In this way, my imaginary landscapes have been visited and the viewer can send a postcard in the same way that they might whilst on vacation.
As a photographer, I have no need to draw sketches. The moment of exposure is that sketch, and it can be directly transferred in an unaltered form, through the most basic darkroom work. In a similar manner to the painters that worked within the ideology of the picturesque, there is a possibility of “perfecting†the image after the photographic sketch has been made. Although photography is valued for its ability to accurately describe a truthful rendition of what it beholds, digital technology can create a different version of reality to what has been recorded on film. Although updated, this new method is very much within the tradition of landscape image making.
I want my images to be subtly deconstructive. The images that I created through careful editing conceal a second image, (the original image that has had elements covered up digitally,) and at the same time, they reveal a history of the place, which is made “real†by my hand. They also have relevance in today’s political climate of terrorism and cultural homogenisation.
I am currently working on a series of images that I shot in China and Japan. In addition to this, I have embarked on a new project of the boderlands between civilisation and wasteland, already having shot images all over the world. These images will be presented without digital interference.
