STATEMENT
My work is inspired by history with all of its intrinsic problems. I am impressed by cultures whose histories have been meticulously recorded and documented. A desire to insert people of lesser known cultures into history is what drives my work. After researching a particular period in time, I create work that exposes the role of a person or a particular group of people in historical society. I employ textiles and paint to create my work. I try to work in a manor that is reminiscent of folk art. I want to communicate the importance of having a personal past, even if that past is based in fantasy.
Most recently, I created 80 felt dolls that wear cotton dresses and hang by clothes pins from wire hangers on a clothes rack. This installation of dolls represents the women of color who worked in the New Americas to create muslin dresses for Queen Marie Antoinette during the 18th century. I am using the dolls to play with the fantasy that the seamstresses must have at least tried the gowns on prior to shipping them to France. I am also exploring the importance of appearance and yet the idea that clothing alone does not transcend ones social standing.
