I am the daughter of a Puerto Rican father and Japanese mother. They are both first generation, and English is their second language. Because my father was in the military, we traveled extensively and I lived in eight different places during the first 25 years or so of my life. Art is a huge influence in every part of my life. My grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, and sister are all artists. Through difficult times it has been a solace and refuge. Art helps me to arrive at a place of clarity, which is extremely important to me because of the many different cultures and traditions in which I was raised. In my artwork I strive to blend these and arrive at some place of understanding. I am particularly drawn to collage and mosaic work because of the process of taking broken and torn pieces and transforming them into a new and beautiful whole. |
