OIO is an artist duo consisting of the Greek composer and pianist Antonis Anissegos (jazz, new music, electronics, experimental music) and the Japanese artist Erika Matsunami (performance, video and sound art, installations). The duo has been collaborating since 2004; both artists have been involved in OIO since late 2006. OIO is based in Berlin and operates much like a collective forum.
OIO’s performance builds on piano music, electronic sounds (sound art) and video images, resulting in a performative mixed media installation. Acoustic and electronic sounds and visual images are overlapped, superimposed and contrasted with one another – a form of cooperative interplay between two or more elements.
Through the thematic context of each project, every piece of work displays different audiovisual forms and means of expression.
Past projects include “deflection – rasenjo no jikan†(2005) at the Kyoto Art Centre (Japan), “trans+ O†(2007) with Japanese artist Kyota Takahashi at the Ballhaus Naunynstr. (Berlin), “still/silent†at GlogauAIR, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Arttransponder (Berlin, 2007), Espai Niu/Hanger (Barcelona, 2008) and the gallery ARTLIFE (Venice, 2009), the experimental video “deflection†(2005) at the Experimental Video Film Festival EXIS 06 (Seoul), Media Art Festival (Friesland, NL), 20th Instans Video Festival (Marseille, FR) and transmediale 07 (Berlin), as well as the audiovisual improvisation “session†(2007) at B-Flat (Berlin) and Gesellschaft/Ort (Wuppertal).
