My art developed from introspection; unfolding into my experiences and memories within a cultural context. Since 1994, the year I moved to South Florida from Argentina, I have been consciously reviewing my recollection of childhood memories. This is an effort to preserve my memories’ physical and psychological essence. I reference; sewing, stitching, knitting, and embroidering, utilizing traditionally feminine approaches of making art as the backbone for my work. By making various size quilts, I wish to translate abstract expressions of the self into physical objects. These represent the concrete form of an interweaving of memories. The materials I use in my art are very symbolic in my conservation process : zip lock bags, burlap, photographs, fabrics, ribbons and memorabilia. Through the process of placing photographs or memorabilia inside zip lock bags and stitching them, I am retrieving my memories as an act of healing and preservation. The burlap and the used potato sacks elaborate a metaphoric imagery that represents the tribal aspects of my culture. This rawness is, in my cultural belief, the embodiment of earth and its products that also allude to mankind. The intricacy or simplicity of the patterns that I develop on my quilts are means to communicate the types of relationships and experiences that have been captured in my memories. As my quilts contain personal imagery, it is my intent for the viewer to re-examine the ‘self’ while drawing connections with my work. |
