Conical Gallery presents a unique layering of old and new spatial archaeology particularly considering the way in which the gallery has been designed to accommodate and incorporate works of a site specific nature. It is with specific purpose that I have approached Conical gallery in relation to the present point of departure within my installation practice. I have attempted to evolve my methodology of making site specific works beyond a direct formal architectural response to site archaeology and past and present contextual function in an bid to develop strategies to 'transcend' what I perceive to be the potential 'end game' of hermetic site works. Conical, as an autonomous zone, offers an opportunity to critique notions of site specificity beyond the somewhat rigid confines of formal responses to the container of a particular space and its place bound identity. Also interested in digital media I have endeavored to imbue my newer works with technological mediatory devices to further critique notions of site.
A unique collaboration born of an initial ‘live’ action involving lightbulbs, mircrophones and hammers PAR 38 / LAMPHOURS and NERVE ENDINGS is a site-specific work which aims to critique and inhabit the interstitial space between performance and installation.
The photographic works I have produced for the EDIFICE LOST project to be exhibited In March 2007 at the McK17 Public Art Project Space, Sydney relate to the historic Lever & Kitchen soap factory site in Balmain, Sydney Australia.
In 1993 I made extensive photographic and video documentation of the then abandoned factory. These works are photo-reconstructions derived from the original black and white negatives taken at the site.
The GPS location of the site has also been overlaid on the image surface.
